Describing Fireworks

This term we have been learning to:

  • use interesting words
  • use describing words
  • use our senses (what we see, hear, feel etc)
  • use a language feature like:  onomatopoeia, similes

Reflection:  I used some great words to describe the sky with the fireworks.  I used words that sound just like what I could hear.  Next time I could use like or as to make a simile.

Money Madness

We have been learning to:
  • recognise and identify NZ coins and notes and their values
  • make amounts by totalling coins and notes using tens and ones
  • make amounts in different ways

It was fun to make the amounts but the ten cent was tricky to move.  It was quite easy.  Next time I could have larger amounts, or I could have no total showing.

Inferring, Summarising and Language Features

I am learning to:

  • make simple inferences
  • summarise information (find key facts and ideas in the text)
  • Recognise and use a range of language features e.g. homonyms/antonyms, similes

Reflection:
It was quite hard to find the verbs when I was folding the flower.  Now I know they are things you have to do.  I was happy with my flowers and I enjoyed following the instructions to make them.  I found it quite tricky to answer the questions so I looked back into the book to find the answers.  Elisha  09.11.17

Daffodil Diamante

I am learning to write a Diamante Poem

  • use interesting (WOW) words to describe Daffodils
  • use a graphic organiser to help me form my diamond poem

I found it quite tricky to think of all the 'ing' words about daffodils.  It helped me to think of which words went in the right place.  I think my poem is nice.  Elisha  05.09.17

I think this is a challenging task but a good way to develop the words (WOW words) in our writing.
You are thinking of strong verbs and describing words.  A good try.  Mrs Templeton  05.09.17

Developing Greater Understanding and Independence

This term I have been learning to ...

develop greater understanding at Level 19-20 (Purple)
  • answer questions about what I've read
  • make a connection to the text
  • use synonyms and antonyms
  • discuss the author's message
  • discuss and describe characters

(Click on full screen or on the slides to view.)

This was tricky for me - It was hard to think of a word to describe an elephant.  I was proud that I finished it.  It might help me to work with another person or to ask for help when I need it.  Elisha  August 2017

I think you found it tricky doing a challenging contract task for the first time.  Keep trying to add lots of detail into your answers so that it shows a deeper understanding of what you have read. Mrs Templeton  15.08.17

Geometry: Classifying 3D Shapes

I am learning to use my own words and the language of geometry to classify 3D shapes.

Reflection:  It was a little bit tricky - I had to name the ones I knew and then work out the one that was left (Cylinder).  I know a lot more than I did before.  It was quite fun doing it.
Elisha  09.08.17

Well done Elisha, you enjoyed this challenge.  The highlighted boxes show your original errors. You were quick to name the shapes and have begun to show greater accuracy when discussing the number of faces, edges and corners of 3D shapes.  11.08.17

Learning about Place Value using Hundreds, Tens and Ones

I am learning to:

  • show the value of numbers using Place Value equipment

Reflection:  I knew what to do but it was tricky fitting some in the boxes for the task.
Well done Elisha, you know how to move up and down in hundreds, tens and ones.  I think it was tricky to move the equipment around the board in this task.  I will try to improve it for the future,  thanks for the feedback.   Mrs Templeton  04.07.17

Welcome to Autumn: Describing the Leaves

Autumn leaves fell all over Elm Park School.  This gave us a great idea - using Kidpix to create leaves to illustrate our awesome autumn words.

I am learning to describe autumn leaves:

  • Choose words to add interest (strong verbs 'ing', use a simile,)

I used a simile and some 'ing' words.  My favourite bit is twirling, swirling because they rhyme
Elisha  04.07.17
Well done Elisha, you did really well with this task.  I love the words you used.  They really are diamonds and jewels looking so golden.  Great job with the simile using like or as too.

Learning to Plan my Writing

I am learning to use a plan to organise my ideas for writing.

I will be successful when:

  • I can plan my ideas before I write
  • I can use quick pictures and words
  • my writing shows the ideas and details from my plan

When I go back to a story, I might forget so I can turn and look at my plan and remember all my ideas.  It helped me think of the special words I wanted to use.  The tricky part was trying to use 'flashing' twice.  I had to think of a different word so I used 'splash'.

Well done Elisha.  Great to see you using some interesting words in your plan.  You showed resilience when you kept trying to think of a different word.  Ka Pai!  Mrs Templeton 10.04.17

Learning to identify sounds in words to help my reading

I am learning to:

  • identify phonic letters and sounds
  • use picture clues to help decode words
  • chunk known parts of words

It was a bit tricky because each time you turned the page the words got mixed up so I had to look very carefully.  One I pressed the wrong one.  I'm proud of getting all the words right because some of them were really hard for me to do especially with the timer one.
Elisha 28.09.17

You are making pleasing progress Elisha, you have really improved your reading skills this term.  Keep using pictures clues to prompt you and check the chunks of sound in words.
Great job.
Mrs Templeton 29.03.17

Statistics: Learning to sort, count, display and make statements about the information

I have been learning to:
  • sort objects into categories for display and make a class pictograph with support
  • discuss the results and make statements

I was proud that I could count up the numbers and get them right on Mathletics.  I found the fewer ones tricky and I made some mistakes.  Elisha

Well done Elisha.  You have reflected on your skills.  You can do the counting but working out differences is tricky, you have to count up or back to solve it.  You can practise more using Mathletics to revise it.
